Products in Multiple Categories (good or bad?)

Hi bhw fam,

I wanted to ask.... I have a couple clients who ask me to put some product in multiple categories for example maybe a t-shirt and I will put it in "clothing" and also "shirts" category.

Should product be only in one category or does it not effect the SEO at all?

All depends on how you lay it out. If you can add them together without it looking odd, like it shouldn’t be there, then maybe try something else. But if it looks like it makes sense, then go for it.

If it looks correct it won't have any "duplicate content" effects as the same product will be showing up on multiple category pages?

It's OK to do but you need to make sure you use rel canonical.

That’s ok. As long as that item fits well, it can be in different parts of the website. You can use Nike as an example. Sometimes they will have the same runners in different parts of their website if it qualifies for both categories. It should be fine.

Now you can have a wordpress post in two categories as example, have the name of category in the url then wordpress will create a second url for the scond category like this;

1st category news: mydomain.com/news/new-google-algo
2st category seo: mydomain.com/seo/new-google-algo
Right?

Wordpress is doing this automatically or must I set maunally canonical link ?

Yes, you can put it in both categories.

You can put products in more than one category. This does not create duplicate content. For example, Nike shoes can be listed in the "Running Shoes" category and also under the "Nike Brand" category. The pages are different. You should only use canonical tags when pages have the same content.

Yes the page has the same content example; blogpost about "blogging with Medium"
I want use this blogpost with same content in category: SEO and Blogging (two categories)
How I do that in wordpress? I must set manually canonical for the post for the second category or does wordpress do this automatically?

Check cnn site: they have categories and have the same content (only the title as excerpt) on their Home site too (new stories).......
This is what I want; my blogpost in the category and the title exerpt of that blogpost on the Home page.

Products can be safely put into multiple categories. For e.g a Product could be in category1 and category2 and then there are certain plugins that will show custom options based on which category they belong to and you can have multiple categories that match those conditions. This way it becomes easy to define rules.

e.g wordartportrait has items that are marked as 'custom-word' category and some subset would have 'custom-color' category. Items could belong to just 'custom-word', or 'custom-color' or both. Based on these the user is presented relevant drop down menu items for selection.

So think about the usability of your site. Categories were designed to simplify navigation and categorization of your products. Don't think of them to game the SEO. Make sure you have atleast 2 or 3 products in the category. If you have less that fit in the category then think about why would you define such category.
