One of my friends has a successful online business but has run into trouble with Paypal's terms of service, so I'm trying to help find some alternatives for him. He considered taking payment through checks and money order, but would probably lose customers that way because most people prefer to pay electronically.

Does anyone have experience with alternative payment websites that I could refer to him?

AlertPay, or 2checkout would be two that I would look at. Also depending on what he is selling you can always go with a real merchant account.

He's got his own website if that makes a difference; would a merchant account allow him more freedom from third parties?

just got google chekout, they only charge 2.9% plus 30 cents if u do less than 1k per monht, paypal charge u 30 bucks per m, even if u dont do any sale..

Google Checkout & 2Checkout would probably be my 2 choices...

Code:
AlertPay
and

Code:
ePassport

would be my alternatives:saint:

Google checkout, or if he's going for a more shady business niche, I hear moneybookers is popular with some. Look at what forms of payments online casinos accept, and select the ones that are most appropriate.

Alertpay, 2Checkout or Moneybookers
One of these should meet your requirements.

One electronically.

if you have Hosting with cPannel and Fantastico, install one of the shopping carts, goto the payments option there is a big list of different options. Or sign up with an online casion, look at the payment options they offer, some have a really big list. I could do this my self and post the list, but then you wouldn't have learned this great method of searching for things, that can be applied to other things. Although it would be nice If I had signed up for all of them and been able to give a referral link. I have signed up for a few of them. StormPay, and CyberGold come to mind, I think I've signed up for a few others but don't really remember.

Plimus is great but you can't transfer money out. They pay every 2 weeks.

I'd stay away from Google Checkout as they like to "limit" like Paypal does.

2checkout.com rocks!!!

googlepay refunded $3500 of my orders for one chargeback. they refunded on shipped orders and said "dont bother to ship those orders as we have closed your account and refunded all currently pending/shipped orders." Boom account closed. Googlepay = Merchant account Nazi's.
