Domain Age - Does it have to be hosted?

In the future I'm planning on doing something with a domain i just picked up. Probably not for about 6-12 months. I grabbed it now so that it could start accruing Domain Age.

The question in, does the site have to be hosted/indexed/etc. to really make this down time worth anything?

Would there be a big benefit to building a few links to some quick content and then letting that sit vs. letting it sit un-hosted?

Any advice would be sweet.

Edit: What about parking it? Does that do anything?

I believe just purchasing/owning the domain is enough to allow it to "age"... however building some links and a theme will only enhance it value when you're ready to use it. Probably worth the small effort.

domain age = domain age no matter what it's being used for when it comes to the value of a name itself.

and yeah parking a name will help some too, esp. if you parked it with a system that lets you customise the content (e.g. parked dot com).

Thanks for all the feedback! It sounds like i have two good options at this point, though I'm still not certain which one i should choose. What options do you way when deciding?

Is it like this?

Parked Domain = easy / cheap
Hosted Domain with some content and a few links = more time / money

Which would be more beneficial for SEO when i do get around to making this site? An easier solution is always nice, but I don't care too much about that. What i really want it the best benefit for my site.

I would host it myself and go ahead and build a generic landing page for seo. Why not get the PR and link juice up instead of just letting it "age".

Throw some adsense up instead of parking.

Just registering the domain won't cut it. it's how long the domain has been indexed for. Doesn't need to rank well or fuck all, just needs to have been indexed at one point and not let drop afterwards. Then it's effectively set to "age". So slap up a couple hundred words of relevant text, fire a handful of backlinks at it, get it noticed, and you're good to go to let it age.
