when to stop building links ?

Hi,

My website is ranking well for the selected keyword (page 1 of G) and I am making decent money with it. My question is should I stop building links or build slower ? My website is not number 1 but I don't think I will ever make it to number one no matter what I do. The number one spot is taken by pr7, 10 years old website with 1mil + backlinks. So I am not trying to get any higher I just want to keep my current ranking. I also want to move to another project and spend less time with this one. What do you think I should do ?

Well, first thing is that if you ever ' stop ' building , you will lose position over time.

As for what you should do is to move on to your other project while doing routine content updates every 2-3 days at the longest. You should maintain your position. If you start to lose ground, tighten up your building routine for a little bit more frequent posting or hire someone to monitor and post stuff for you. Outsourcing an article and blog poster from the freelancing seciont here is dirt cheap from what I see. I don't know what the quality is, as that I don't use them personally.

I hear good things though. Give that a shot and see how it works out for you.

Thanks for reply. Well I use one of the article writing services on BHW and I am happy with them. Thanks for the help. I will keep casually adding content and probably adding 1 link per day.

Just slow down your building, you'll notice a decrease in ranking if you stop it, obviously still analyse the websites ranking and if it does drop at all, start to build backlinks faster, then when you've obtained the rank you were previously at, slow down again.

You bet, sounds like a solid plan. Keeping it up with prevent you from being jumped by another site...google is in the information business and your rank standard is content driven by your keyword relevance and how useful and up to date your content is. They are the first and most vicious ' customer content driven ' service there is.

You'd think in that being the case, they would respect us more and be kinder, as they aren't paying us for the content we provide them with if you stop and think about it.

They need us WAY more than we need them.

Outsourcing some of link-building will suit your program. just reduce little link building efforts and watch what happens to your position. if still on higher one then can gradually decrease till the time you know this much efforts are must to keep it on that particular position.

You never stop building - Ive experienced first hand that it will just lead to rank degredation.

keep link building... if you are not getting backlink, your SERP will move to page 2,3,4, etc

Really depends on the keyword. I have a keyword that I've been ranking for well over a year and only built a couple of links to it.

Of course...hardly anybody searches for that term.

The competitive terms require constant link building.

If one is building 10-12 links per day for different pages per day for like 6 months then it really wont matter if you stop building links for 20-25 days .I think that would turn out to be good as previous links which have been exchanged by the person in last 6 months will get stable and cached properly.
I think small halts for 1 out of 6 months is considered good .

That is a wrong idea. Don't ever stop building links or else you will lose whatever you have made... Since you are ranking good in Google then thats good. Just continue your link building. Its a consistent job..

You could outsource your linkbuilding for the site. If the time you would save is worth the cash(you can get backlinks for 10c each) then you could just put $10-$20 into it every week to keep a few backlinks coming in. If you are certain you cant/dont want to realy build your position further then you can get away with automated and manual paid submissions for some time.

If your site is making you good money, you would be better of concentrating on that site and outsourcing your second project to someone else. Never lose your money maker. I would never trust a good money site in the hands of the others as they could mess it up altogether with stupid back links.

Keep building back links. You may not beat the number 1 site any time soon but you will notice that you are on the second or third page for some keywords without even knowing it. When you have a sustained back linking effort, those keywords will slowly start to show you in the first page giving you more and more traffic.

In other words - do not put your main site on the back burner.

No I will not advice you to stop back linking process, rather slow it. Give 2 hours a day or couple of days from a week to it and focus on your next project.
