A Suffolk computer expert is predicting that artificial intelligence (AI) will replace human coders in 10 years' time.

Creative Computing Club founder Matthew Applegate said: "I'm teaching the last generation of coders. We are looking at being knocked out by AI very soon."

Mr Applegate started the club in 2012 with the ethos "50% work 50% play".

"AI will creep into everything; pop music, writing... plumbers are safe! Technology is always an interesting ride," he said.

His prediction comes as a House of Lords committee says that we should embrace the positives of AI rather than just focus on the risks.

The Communications and Digital Committee's report looked at large language models (LLMs), which are what power generative AI tools like ChatGPT.

Mr Applegate said: "They trained AI on a thing called GitHub, which is an online repository of all the best examples of code, and some of the worst. So it was able to determine the best practices very early on.

"So we've bypassed a lot of those problems very quickly. We've got probably about ten more years of teaching code."

Humans are always wrong when predicting future. Those who try fail, and those who succeed, succeed by accident. I would be glad if AI will automate things across many industries, including rendering certain jobs obsolete. It's beautiful how something manmade, can learn and develop on its own.

Though I still believe engineering is here to stay, be it with assistance of AI or not. Don't focus on software only, get into mechanical or electrical engineering, create something new.

AI in coding is cool, but replacing all coders in 10 years? Nah. It's great for automating stuff and speeding up code, but there's more to coding than spitting out lines. We humans are still the champs at tackling complex problems, explaining tech jargon to non-tech folks, and adapting to the ever-changing coding world. AI will change things, for sure, but not replace us.

Why would it need any human to learn from? It assumes that at that time (in 10 years) it has not improved to the point where it can learn by itself and come up wih new ways of writting and improving software development.

I think its also important to remember that ChatGP does not equal all AI or what AI is capable of. Its just one AI, which was created for Q/A NOT to replace developers, so just in case anyone here says it will not replace 'good' developers, we have to keep in mind that we don't know what an AI that could do that would look like, since its likely not going to be a Q/A chatbot like ChatGTP.

This is not true. Some people will be always there to improve AI and they are also coders. So, yes, AI will replace some but not all as a whole.

AI can easily handle simple coding tasks (make a bulk mailer in php) but coders will be needed for complex tasks. Just imagine the prompts needed to create a program like MS Office, or a web browser.

Why would that be difficult? As long as he AI is as smart as a human and stays in touch with the client, it should be able to get it done, just like a team of humans would.
