Judging by your story, it seems like they charged you every month for a while, at least since your trial has ended.

^maybe, or they’ve simply put you on a yearly plan and the charge is upfront payment in which case an email to them stating you don’t want to use the service, should result in them closing your account and cancelling the invoice.

Always de-active or delete your account (especially the paid ones) if you're not going to use it. You were lucky your card is empty!

Actually, a yearly plan makes a lot more sense than a monthly plan. But make sure you haven't paid that for the last four years.
