Sig changed by mod, did I do wrong?

Hey guys, I have been here quite a while now and last year I posted a blog commenting app here that was a free app with opt in but gave it away for free without the opt in here. Pretty much bang on a year ago I donated and became a Jr VIP around the same time I posted the commenter. I had a small text link in my sig leading to the opt in website for the commenter, the text was regular size and colour.

The other day my VIP access ran out and before I had the chance to donate again I had my sig changed by an unnamed mod to something along the lines of "I will not try to sell stuff in my sig again otherwise I will get banned"

The thing that confuses me is that I see tons of people around here with big garish image adverts advertising something or some website and others with big bright coloured text adverts in their sig. Is it just because my VIP ran out that I had an issue with this?

If the mod had left a name I could have contacted them directly but as they didn't I thought I would post here as I do not want to piss anyone off but I also don't see the sense behind it.

What do you guys think? Was my sig dodgy or fine? Would a link to the thread rather than my website be a better idea?

Maybe they perceived your attempt to build a list as an attempt to sell..

Or perhaps one of the mods just made a mistake (they are human after all) and incorectly assumed you were selling something.. I imagine it's a pain in the ass checking every link in every sig on bhw.. I'm sure they weren't singling you out, you just caught the eye of someone.

Maybe try contacting Zen19 or Hexalor. I've noticed them both to be fairly active around here in the last little while..

Oh I realise they are human which is why Im asking if its ok for me to put the link up again, it was there for a whole year without issue then it became an issue in the two days I was not classed as a donor. I will get in touch with hexalor after reading that thread.

yeh id get in touch with the mods or admi first. i too was banned for my sig link which was a total mistake on my part and i really didnt know. so to avoid the ban. just speak to cple mods etc. find out exactly where you stand

I read that thread and, maybe Im just being a total imbecile, but I didn't see how my link was infringing on any rules. I have contacted Hexalor in the hope that I can get it sorted. To be honest I had it up for a whole year so if it is a problem I still had a good run lol. I don't wanna piss anyone off, especially the mods so Ill just be patient about it and wait for Hex to hopefully get back to me.

I am assuming it because my donor status was removed for a couple of days rather than the link itself so hopefully now I got back my status it can go back.

Well I used to have an affliate link for a membership ran by a VIP member (who is now a mod) and I got banned for a week, along with my sig being changed to "i will not try to promote shitty membership sites". I think that was pretty rediculous, especially since that VIP member had his site in his sig, meaning it was obviously allowed.

Even my signature link is gone. Hexalor told me that it is against the rules so its cool with me. "I will not try to sell stuff in my sig again otherwise I will get banned" was included in my PM too, just contact hex. He is really cool and replies really fast.

Thats pretty much what I got my sig changed to so maybe it was Hexalor. I have contacted him now so hopefully I will get a reply at some point. If it is against the rules then that is cool I just wanted a little clarification so I don't do anything to get banned in future, that would suck.

it's better to ask any one of the mods regarding this issue.

all mods do this for a good reason. that's a sign they care about this community.

Well I got a response from Hexalor. You are allowed to sell stuff through an affiliate link but not build an opt in list with my Free Blog Commenter. I was tempted to put a link to the thread in the download section where I was giving it away without an opt in but I didn't wanna confuse anyone into thinking I had put my website link back in my sig.

Just to clarify you are fine to put an affiliate link in your sig but not a link to your website that gives something away in return for an opt in. Im guessing you also could not link back to your own selling site, unless it is an affiliate link. Thats what I understood from the PM.
