WTF with Reddit's low "online members"recently?

For the past few days a lot of big subs have like 1/2-3/4 of their usual "online now" members.

Is it even worth to pay attention to?

Or just another "glitch" Reddit is regularly having

been waiting years for reddit to get dethroned à la digg.
with how consolidating the internet is getting, who knows.
where are people going instead? niche forums are okay replacement. 1 more website to keep track of.

When they made their API more restricted I think a lot of people just said fuck it as they didn't want to switch to the official app that feels like cancer.

Not sure what's going on but they are preparing for their IPO. they might be tweaking some algorithms behind the scenes.

I own a mid-size subreddit (50k+ members), and I can tell you there have absolutely been algorithmic changes. Specifically, Reddit has been prioritizing discussion subs over image and video subs.

Not all subreddits have had their activity go down. Ours went down dramatically, but there are subreddits focused more on discussion that have shot up into the stratosphere. I'm talking from 20k members to 200k members.

It's a shame, really. Reddit is a terrible place for discussion. The upvote/downvote mechanism encourages a hivemind, and it's hard to have a meaningful discussion with points and counterpoints. Everyone just converges on one popular opinion. As others have said, Reddit dying off can't come soon enough.
