does anyone know why a phone number would be removed from google business listing?
It happened to my friends listing and he cant put it back on.

Open your device's Settings app and tap Google
and then
Manage your Google Account.
At the top, tap Personal info.
Under "Contact info," tap Phone number
and then
your phone number.
From here, you can:
Add a phone number: Under "Your phone numbers," select Add recovery phone. (We recommend that you add a recovery phone number if you haven't already.)
Change your phone number: Next to your number, tap Edit
Edit
and then
Update number.
Delete your phone number: Next to your number, tap Delete
Delete
and then
Remove number.

That sounds like youre changing the phone number associated with the google account and not the GMB

Had a similar issue with a client's listing a while back. Google sometimes flags updates if they think there's suspicious activity. Could be due to inconsistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) info across the web or someone reported the number as spam. Best bet is to ensure the number is consistent everywhere online, then reach out to GMB support to clarify. They're usually pretty good about sorting these things out if you can prove ownership and the legitimacy of the biz.

Have another user go to Maps and suggest an edit. That could get it back up there if it's a trusted user.
