Hello, first, I this post is not accusing GPL Cellular of anything, but I know I am not the first person to raise an eyebrow at the requirements of this plugin.. ‘allow_url_fopen = On’.
With very little skill, anyone would be able to execute remote code and own your site/ server. So, for the benefit of not only myself, but other users who download this plugin, why is this a requirement in order to run the plugin?

Excellent question, and you're the first one to ask this... allow_url_fopen was required because the plugin needs to download files and our catalog database file to your wp system. The first version of the gplcellar plugin did this using using "file_get_contents" which required the allow_url_fopen flag to be enabled so I could pull down the gplcellar catalog database json file. This was changed to use WordPress'es wp_remote_get method. Thank you for pointing this out and I will remove this from our requirements page as it no longer applies.
