Facebook wants to know what every single user in his territory likes. With liking fb pages, people will categorize themselfs all by themselfes. And that's exactly what FB wants to have. Nowdays Facebook's Advertising is good but not perfect. They could have it much better. But imagine advertising with Facebook, if you can choose fb pages in your campaing, that your target customer likes. Let's say you want to promote an ebook about golfing. Creative as you be, you will find a couple fb pages, which a golf playing person could 'like' [not longer be fan of]. golf hotels, golf brands, golf websites. And you will only pay for impressions exactly on those profiles.... i don't know what you think, but for me, that smells like big mula :D

But being a fan when you target is exactly the same as liking it from that perspective.

Facebook already used pages and the preferences people have to target. Changing it has nothing to do with advertising.

The facebook ads only allowed you to target on your OWN pages or group members, doing otherwhise would be behavioral targeting over the entire facebook population ... I dont think they can do that without a beacon type backslash

fb has been doing this for a long time
im part of a seo group
and i always see seo ads next to my profile

But haven't fan pages just had their number of fans changed to number of likes? Meaning you would have to find a "fresh page" made after the new update, other wise your going to find fan pages with people who "become a fan" but then got changed to "Likes this"..

The big deal to me is that you can now add like buttons to website pages other than Facebook and categorize your pages by object type (eb books, movies, etc), give them titles, and links back to your pages which when someone likes your page the data will shown in peoples profiles.

I haven't figured it out yet, but I'm trying to figure out if you can then message people who liked your page. That would be huge. It would be like a whole new type of list marketing.
