I think the "Like" system works out better... (even though nothing really has changed LOL)
In real life, I don't say "I have become a fan of Dogs"... I say "I Like Dogs".
Also, in the news feed, it comes as "<name> Likes <thing>." and has a more eye-catching Thumbs-Up image.
FB is just trying to make it's site more like a conversation, to say the least.
Trust me, it won't work out better (well, for us marketers).
The new "like" system blends in with all the other pointless news on the feed, which in turn leads to fewer clicks, etc.
I have also noticed two things:
1. On my main fb profile, there are very few people "liking" pages as opposed to the past when there would be so much more people becoming a fan of pages.
2. I monitor a few fanpages every now and then in my bookmarks, and their growth in "likes" (the old "fans") has dropped tremendously.
3. When facebook made the temporary change yesterday for 2 hours, my clicks and revenue dropped in HALF during those 2 hours.
offtopic:
Finally, FB is deleting pages like a fucking bulldozer.
If you have a viral fanpage, say goodbye to it in 24 hours if you are monetizing it.
If you're smart, you'll be able to pull in a large amount of dough within those 24 hours. Thank god for less competition now.
