trying to recover a website created in 2006

1st, if this thread isn't in the right place, apologies, this seemed the most appropriate of all.

I am dealing with a website that was created in 2006 and last updated in 2017.

Sadly, the person who created the website is deceased and the relationship between the developer and the website owner didn't end well.

The website was coded and never updated to a more modern platform (for ease of use / updating content)

The website owner has access to the domain registry.

My problem is that when i inspect the domain registry "client area" i can't find any files (html, css..etc..)

Is it possible / feasible that the code is housed somewhere else?

If so, how would i find a clue that would point me in the right direction? (in the code itself, somewhere in the domain registry client area)?

You have to ping the domain name and check who owns the IP address (hosting). Probably the website is not hosted with the company from which he bought the domain.

I did exactly that to find out who was the host in early December, and turns out the website owners can access his client area |(somehow he had the login credentials..somewhere...)

However, i can't seem to find any html, css, java files on the host website.

Surely, those website files should be located on the host website, right?

You can easily download HTML, CSS, and Javascript files from the browser. Other items like PHP files that are executed on the server side must be downloaded from the hosting server and you don't have access to them via web browser.

If the website/web content is old and it is mostly static, you can easily replicate it and then just re-direct the domain to the new host.

Thank you for the offer, that's very kind. (interestingly, i read a thread on a newsletter, today, about how much of a generous person you are...small world!!)

Let me dig deeper in to see if i am talking out my ass and missing the elephant in the room, i'd hate to make you waste your time.

Surely, those website files should be located on the host website, right?

In hosting panel (cpanel, directadmin etc) find file manager, in a list of folders there should folder with a name of your domain or public_html folder - here will be the website's files

Here is an update.

I spoke to customer support. Turns out files are only accessible through FTP, Wordpress like builders are not supported by default.

So....support recommended using filezilla to access the files.

So, i am delving into the world of FTP / YT tutorials.
