I'm was having a hard time ranking. So I've decided to start my blog over from scratch. I plan to re-launch June 30th with over 100 posts of keyword rich content. My competition is number 1 in g0"*gle with 118,000 backlinks! How do I compete with that? #2-10 is hardly relevant and ranking. I used Market Samurai and most of the websites that the links were coming from no longer exist. So it's not like I can replicate what my competition did because the websites are not there anymore. Any suggestions?

Target other keywords? You should go for the low hanging fruit!

Keyword in domain + keyword in page/site title + keyword in H1 tags will get you quite a long ways for the on-page SEO.
Assuming your site is old enough to start serious backlinking start nullifying their backlinks. Do research and come up with 5,000 or so of their highest PR backlinks and start getting your own backlinks from as many of those domains as possible.
At the same time keep up the other stuff you have been doing. Also, build feeder sites. For each major content page build reference pages on Squidoo, WP-MU sites, etc. Then for each of those sites build another page on an unrelated site linking to the reference site. Vary your anchor text extensively and make sure you have a good mix of do-follow vs no-follow.
Then ping the hell out of all of it.

rank more keywords aim for some long tail keywords get top 5 positions in them.
I dont see the point in just wanting that 1 keyword if you dont have the skills to get it specially first. If you are semi confident with your seo skills then target some lower competition keywords and long tail keywords and dont think about being number1 be top 5 then think about number1.

keyword in H1 tags - I could work on it.
This wouldn't bother me so much except I'm getting my but kicked by non-relevant sites. I don't have this issue with my other websites. I know that this site (my problem site) will generate a lot of leads and a lot of income. I'm going to have to outsource some of this. I'll keep you posted on my progress
