My experience is very simple: you can't rank a web-site without backlinks.

Not true. For some easy keywords, you can still rank without backlinks. But you will probably not make money even after ranking in this case.

Backlinks give you that extra push pretty much, lets say you got to #5 without backlinks. If you get a few good links you can be pushed to #1 but without these links you might never get to #1. That's how important good backlinks are.
