URL shortening Script

I was thinking about installing my own url-shortener like xyz.info or x7x.us or better yet yourdomain.com/cEd4Ti and create a 302 redirect for each link you post at twitter... and any other similar site.

Why a self hosted url-shortening?

This is much better because of two fold:
- the link on let's say Twitter now belongs to you, not to the redirector. So more links to you from a High PR site, nofollow anyway but a real link. So you would get lots of links that now you are wasting.
- You can also get your own brand across, instead of promoting the url shortener itself.

Does anyone here have a script like this? One that is easy to setup and use, and works well? If so, please let me know.

Free is the best that exists.

Thanks.

Interesting idea. I might write a shortener script this weekend as a project.

If you were nefarious, you could wait until your site was being used a lot and then make it 301 to one of your other sites. You'd be linked from tons of sites instantly.

If you create your own shortening script, please remember to share with me
;)

Any more suggestions anyone?

A couple of years back i ran a short url service for people, some people used it and it was getting tons of hits, the problem i encountered was that the 4 letter domain, i bought it from godaddy and someone must have received a spam email with my domains short url, well, i got my site suspended from godaddy but they offered me to put the site back up for a ?400 and something fee! In the end i didnt think it was worth it so just let the domain expire.
by the way, i was hosting this domain and service on my own dedicated server!

How were you making money from your service?

GD really sucks to host domains. But the good thing is that real BHers can use that to their own benefit. I'm sure you know how.

To make money: The script had the option of enabling an iframe at the top or bottom of the page, so I used to display some adverts on there.
