Hello BHW'ers

I have been under critical development for a couple months now on a really great one-of-a-kind idea for a social networking site...

It looks good... but... is it even worth it?

I mean, companies such as Facebook and Youtube have billions and billions of dollars spent on advertisings and such... and I'm 14, and have little to no money and not the best tools.

I'm so confused... part of me wants to delete the entire site and just focus on IMing but some of me wants to come out a millionaire a year from now when I'm 15...

This idea has not been done yet in social networking and has the potential to be big.

I just wanted to know, is it even worth it to start a social networking site without the tools of SocialEngine and other do-it-for ya softwares and only on pure php?

Ya go for it. If nothing else, you can put it in your college resume that you made a unique semi successful social network. Get your family members to invest and go all out. You have nothing to lose because you don't have to pay bills and buy food.

One thing i'm worried about though... i want it for the long run... i have a feeling social network sites will die down just as msn did.

I doubt it. In fact I think they will be way bigger! This is just the beginning and social networks will probably be a huge part of everyone's life (it already is for lots of people) in the near future. Why else would Google try to get in it. The won't die down but I just want to warn you not to expect to be as successful as facebook or any of the big players. It's possible but you probably won't (no offense). You can still make good money and have a good business though.

is 45K in one year likely on a social network?

If as you said there is something new and hasnt been done there always is potential to be popular, but you have to try it. Sooo, like nike says, just do it :P

You won't achieve success if you count income even before your project is finished. You must work hard, make it unique and then you can think about profits.

Everything is possible, there is for sure hundreds of interesting ideas waiting to be implemented.

seriously, one of the biggest problems is counting profits before you even have the product. I've seen so many of my friends do this, years went by, they haven't done a thing. You can't sell something if you don't have it, so the best thing to di, instead of fantasizing about it, use that time for building it, you may find out tat finishing a project is a whole new level compared to starting it & more often than not, it's much harder & way more work than you initially think. As mentioned above, if you don't have bills to pay, that's a good start already.

great advice! i think the best thing would be is that you tried rather than have what if in the end

You are really more willing than most people for your age, congratulations on this matter.
