it depends on the niche and keywords. For tough niches + keywords (buy car insurance, or forex trading for example) going straight for strong, powerful PBNs and niche edits is the most effective approach. If you throw web 2.0s and profile links at these keywords you're not going to rank in a million years.
For long tail keywords and / or low competition niches, however, you might get away even with SEO tools (Money Robot, GSA, RankerX, Scrapebox, etc.)

this one I don't know, but I know that google has been cracking down on high volume posting lately, so I don't think this is the best strategy right now. Slow and steady win the race nowadays
not sure what you mean by "search-related issues". If you mean avoiding google's hammer then I don't know if there's such a thing, I think most sites of non-billionaire owners get hit at some point, it's just a matter of time...

The articles should be based on your topic. Your article should also have something new to provide to differentiate it from the many others on Google that are about your topic.
