pick a niche, look at competitor that sits in that niche, target low difficulty keywords. this is easier if you are familiar with the niche yourself

Target long-tail keywords at the beginning. Then, progressively, as you build authority and backlinks, you can go for more competitive keywords. I suggest SemRush for keyword research, as you can find it "cheaper" than others.

as long as your content is ad friendly you can also use adwords, to get a start, and then use the ideas from that to plug into the google search and get other terms in the auto complete prompts.
