Existing Site VS Expired Domain question

Hi,

I faced a problem with choice. The existing site in fllipa cost around $1000 has potential and has traffic and backlinks. While I can find expired domain with similar price.

What is your advice?

Buy the site and continue to invest content and backlinks or get the expired domain and build a new site?

Depends on the site quality and traffic as per your niche. No one can say how much traffic is good traffic or is it worth 1000$ or not until and unless they know the niche and value of the traffic. If you can find an expired domain with no cost and getting at a regular price and you are sure that you build build same level of design and content just go ahead with the expired domain. If not existing site will save a lot of time for you IMO

Thank you for your answer. I think the major reason for buying existing website is to save time and I can start 301 redirect my another site traffic to the new site in same niche.

You didn't mention if the sites belong to the same niche. If yes, then also it's difficult to judge. However, activating an expired domain while harnessing it's full power would require deployment of right strategy and expertise. Content strategy, keyword research would be the basis but for the ED, the work will be more. However, if for the existing domain, the site is having declining revenue or the traffic is shown as manipulated traffic, then buying that one could also be risky.

First off, are those metrics & traffic estimates legitimate. Always do your due diligence before making a purchase like that.

Second, if everything in the first part of what I said is in line, are you supplied with a plan from the seller to maintain & expand or do you need to come up with that yourself?

If it were me, I’d start fresh. Though, if you’re looking to build on something that’s already been built, perhaps the existing may be the option for you. But don’t forget to do your due diligence on the project/seller prior to final purchasing.

You are right. It is important to check on the traffic and other stuff. But also I checked on the index status. The goal is to 301 on my existing site traffic to the new site. I think as long as the niche is same and the site is not been used for some crazy stuff, it should be fine. I never handled the task to rebuild a site on the expired domain before. So maybe not to try it.

Thanks for your reply. The situation is I have a good site generating traffic, and for business reason I want to 301 the content from the site into a new site. The situation now comes with 2 solution, one is I get a expired domain and build a site and start the job, another is buy the existing site and start 301.

It is really hard to make a decision.

The expired domain has many good backlinks and been not used for any funny stuff, from the backlinks standpoint the expired domain has more power than the existing site. But on the other hand, the SEMrush and Google analytics shows the traffic from the site is there, which could means if I buy the site and start moving the content over, the index should not be the issue.

If the existing site is very close to your niche or is already a competitor, I will recommend you go for it.

Since you claim it's already doing well on the SERP, all you need to invest in is mostly content(with proper keyword research), and some more backlinks.

It is easier to grow an established site that already ranks than to grow afresh.

Remember sometimes, expired domains don't produce desired results. Even for those that produce the results, it could pump for a short few months, then tank before growing once again.

But at the end of the day, the choice is yours. Left for me, I will go with the already established site. The only time that I would go for an expired domain is when the expired domain has good backlinks, ones that are better than those on the live website. This is assuming you've done your due diligence with regards to purchasing the expire domain.
