Is Google against review blogs?

not really, Just Focus More On Informative Keywords In your Reviews Articles, rater than Commercial Keywords, Cause google is really against sites those don't spend money on ads, and rank on commercial keywords through SEO.

A blog that solely focus on products and site reviews a good niche to start?

I noticed that Google is not friendly with review blogs, how true?
My offline friend has a review blog and he's pulling more traffic every month, this is his 3rd month and no sign or issue with Google update.
well google is not against review blog to the best of my knowledge but have guide lines all blog must follow

Yes, these types of blogs are getting hammered these days.

You should have larger portion of content informational, not commercial.
i agree to the part that most of the blog are getting harmed but adhering to google guidelines and policies will help in terms of safety

buyer intent kws are a lot harder to rank for and especially to stay ranked today than they were say 2-3 years ago. I noticed that most of such keywords that I rank high for are topics which I've extensively covered through related information kws and interlinked with the buyer intent article. eg. buyer intent/review keyword: best wired controller for big hands eg. of info keywords that I written and interlinked with the buyer intent article: how to make small controllers bigger (DIY), wired vs wireless controllers, will wired controllers continue to be produced, how to extend controller cord, etc.

This has helped me push review articles more than anything but you also need to make sure that the info articles "surrounding" your review article are ranking high and when they are they'll pick some nice backlinks naturally this also boosts your review article rankings.

Their policies are not clear and change all the time. What worked before might not work next update.

What you must do instead is learn how the search engines actually view web and rank search results.

Google is not against review blog or website, It's algorithms are designed to detect and penalize low-quality or deceptive content, including fake reviews or manipulative practices

Well, I've heard mixed opinions on review blogs, but success stories like your friend's prove it can work. Stay consistent and quality-focused, and Google may just favor you too.

not really if your article contains informative words. you can face issue with google if you do affiliate marketing in your review blog that looks suspicious
What would be an optimal way to do review blogs for affiliate products without looking suspicious?

post informative articles first, and get the green light from Google like you are actually reviewing products with informative words, then try to add affiliate links later in a less suspicious way. do not just add directly

They are seen as having thin content, which might be part of the reason they can't compete in search results.

Publish 80% Info articles and 20% Review articles.
It's a best practice.

I wouldn't say Google is necessarily against these. But majority of classical review blogs tend to be poor in nature, and sort of made to abuse the search engines, get as many users and squeeze as many dollars.

Which is what everyone in the business world is looking to do.

But given that Google's own survival depends on serving the best content to customers, review blogs often fail short of doing that.

I wrote for a review site myself for a while. As authors, we were advised to write as informative content as possible about the tested products (short history of the manufacturer, short description of the general nature of the product, short tutorials if necessary) so that Google would prefer us.

Review only blogs are pretty much relics of the past

Maybe some have good enough backlinks to hang on to a fast disappearing list of target keywords but starting a review only blog nowadays is probably not a good idea

Do you know what still works?

INFORMATIVE blogs that do DEEP DIVES with only a HANDFUL of review pages.

The review pages are the "money pages" for such sites

Still, many of these are GETTING KILLED BY GOOGLE recently because a lot of the people that RUN these types of blogs GOT LAZY and went FULL AI or almost fully AI
