Recently Google claimed that backlinks are not in the top 3 ranking factors.
Due to the overload of quality AI content, I guess that backlink weight will increase.

they're playing "here's the fool, there's no fool" with us...

I also believe the same thing. The top 3 ranking factors might just be very simple easy to achieve. Then wherever backlinks stands at might just be difficult. As we know backlinks aren't particularly easy to get especially when you have little to no budget.

No.

Google's focus is on the eventual growth of AI driven search. Google will deliver responses out of its database of knowledge with references to other sites. It needs to be able to judge the value of a site as an input into its enormous database and as a reference in a response. That's why EEAT has become a big deal.

Links will never be completely erased IMO, but the way they factor into ranking and referral in AI responses will continue to narrow their value. The more google understands the EEAT attributes of an entity and its corresponding site, the more it will be able to assess whether a link is relevant and whether it should care about whether the link is a sign that the linked entity is authoritative. Google is going to get harsher about devaluing links and index less of the internet as it deems low quality sites/pages to fall below EEAT metrics.

My opinion on this would be, Google's ranking factors evolve, but quality content and user experience remain key; however, backlinks can still enhance your site's authority and visibility.

My opinion on this is Google keeps changing how it ranks websites, but having good websites that link to your site is still important because it shows that your content is trusted and reliable.

Backlinks have always been a debatable topic. While AI content's on the rise, the context and relevancy of backlinks remain critical. It's about the quality, not just quantity. Google's constantly evolving, so adaptability's the game. In my experience, diverse and organic link profiles never lost their charm. But yeah, always be ready to pivot your strategy. Keep an eye on algorithm updates and trust your gut, mate. Got a feeling we'll see some interesting shifts soon.

To be honest I don't think they ever really devalued backlinks in that sense they just devalued certain types of links or poor backlink profiles in terms of how many types of certain links you have.

Didn't Google do away with discounting poor backlink profiles as a way to fight against negative SEO?

I think it's not right. Backlinks play vital role in seo. They improve authority, visibility, page rank, credibility. And they will continue to do so.

Backlinks were always the biggest rank factor and will continue to be so.
I reluctantly agree - after years of tweeking this and tweeking that I recently investigated a competitor (again) that had terribly bad speed, using google speed tool it failled every factor scoring a 12 (so much for site speed being a ranking factor) - but it sits at #2 for a number of search phrases - this time I saw thay had added nearly 3000 backlings links (in my opinion spammy links - from Indonesia) but Google is rewarding them. It was the cornerstone of the original PageRank and remains the cornerstone IMO - other tweaks by Google over the years have been peripheral and to keep peaople in jobs.

I had a website stuck at 10th for ages, backlinks and content better than all above it, optimized it for speed and it went 3rd over night
