I never done that, even GeneratePress/GenerateBlocks support team recommend a plugin.

It's almost impossible to add a slider without using a WordPress plugin.
If you wish to use a slider, please check out this one: https://nl.wordpress.org/plugins/gutenslider/
It's free to use and very very lightweight and compatible with the default Gutenberg editor.
