I don't record, but on the few occasions that I've needed to I used the free version of Thundersoft's software. It does put a watermark in the middle of all of the clips, but I've never been bothered by this because I have only recorded when I needed to prove something to someone, so it wasn't a problem for me

I use quicktime for recordng the screen. If you are on mac, you don't need a third party screen recorder.

In my opinion, Bandicam is the most used because of its simplicity. Camtasia ranks second and is easily cracked for free use
