Hello,

As an example, let's say that I've an ecommerce website that sells mainly leather jackets. My domain name is leatherjacket.com (so it's an EMD).

I have many categories in relation to "Leather jacket" (e.g. : White leather jacket, thin leather jacket, leather jacket for kids,...) but I also have some other categories (e.g. : Leather boots, leather hat,...)

How I am supposed to do the siloing ? Because I've an EMD, I can't create and index a category page for the keyword "Leather jacket" as the main elmement of my silo.

So how I'm supposed to do internal linking betwen all these categories of my website ? Any ideas ?

Thanks

I had a déjà vu with this comment

But it was not a déjà vu, you are actually spamming the same question over and over again.

For your EMD "LeatherJacket.com," create a comprehensive "Leather Jacket" category page. Then, link to subcategories (e.g., White, Kids) and other related categories (e.g., Leather Boots) using relevant anchor text for effective siloing and SEO.

Look at it from the POV of parent-child pages.

"Leather jacket" would be a parent page and then "leather jacket for kids", "white leather jacket", etc would be the child pages. Similarly, "leather boots" would be the parent page and then "leather boots for men" would be the child page.

Ideally, each child page should have an internal link to other relevant child pages (of the same parent page) as well as a link to the parent page.

your main categories (silos) would be...

- jackets
- boots
- hats
[etc...]

And white, thin, etc... are attributes, so they don't need categories, you can simply install a filtering / sorting plugin on your site that lets visitors sort the products they're interested in (jackets, boots, etc) by whatever they want (price, color, thickness, etc..)

Now, if you wanted to further silo the site into kids / adults, or men / women you would do it like this...

jackets > kids
jackets > adults

boots > kids
boots > adults

hats > kids
hats > adults

[etc...]

And you would - obviously - optimize your pages for each one of the main keywords, like this...

HOMEPAGE... optimized only for your brand (in your case the brand is the EMD, which is "leather jackets").... or, you could optimize for both the brand (again, the EMD in your case since there is no brand, if you do have a brand just create a logo with it and name the logo file after your brand, and also include the brand on the homepage) and for other leather apparel.

When I say "optimize the homepage for leather jackets and other apparel" I mean that on the homepage you should include the words "Leather Jackets and Other Leather Apparel", or "Leather Jackets and Other Leather Accessories", or however you want to word your slogan / headline.

leatherjackets.com/jackets... optimized for your main keyword (leather jackets) and other partial-match / LSI keywords that are STRICTLY related to jackets. You don't want any "leather boots" or "leather hats" type of keyword appearing on this page because this might create cannibalization issues and google might not know which pages to rank for which keyword and they might not rank this page at all, or they might rank it way lower than other pages, and you want the leatherjackets.com/jackets page to rank the highest for the "leather jackets" keyword.

You can include keywords like "leather jackets for kids" or "leather jackets for adults" (or both) on this page, though as this would make perfect sense since all of these keywords address the same main topic (jackets).

leatherjackets.com/jackets/kids... this page would be optimized for the main keyword "leather jackets for kids" and any other LSI / partial-match keywords that you'd consider important. By "optimized for" I mean...

- have the main keyword (leather jackets for kids) in the title of the page
- have the first image on this page called leatherjacketsforkids.jpg, or leather_jackets_for_kids.jpg if you want to use underscores, it doesn't matter... or you can use png, or webp, or whatever extension you want, just name the 1st image on this page as the main keyword, that's the important part
- have the ALT tag of this image the main keyword (leather jackets for kids)
- include the main keyword in the 1st paragraph of your content (if there is such content, otherwise ignore this part)

[etc...]

I won't continue with all of the other pages because the process is exactly the same, you'd just follow the above guidelines but replace the keywords and URLs and images, etc...

As for interlinking... you'd be interlinking the main categories (jackets, hats, boots) from the main menu and that should be enough. As for internal linking within silos you can use whatever configuration and tools needed. You can interlink manually from the description of products, you can link using a "related products" plugin like YARPP, you can interlink from a short snippet at the top of the page, etc... Just get creative and have fun with the design of your website, the important parts are to keep the design clean, fast, and compact so that people don't have to make more than 3 clicks (more than 2 ideally) from the homepage to find any product that they want, no matter if it's leather jackets, leather boots for kids, or leather hats for adults. All of these main categories and sub-categories should be maximum 3 clicks away from the homepage, that's what matters... Oh, and also the CWV and site speed, crawlability and mobile friendliness, these are important too... although, if you do silo and design your site correctly the crawlability part should be solved implicitly...

Also, make sure to read this guide on siloing, it is pretty good and it will help you understand how to silo any site that you want:

But because of my EMD, Google will rank my HomePage for the keyword "Leather Jacket" and not the category page, right ? They are risks of cannibalisation I think

Yes, I understand this stucture. However, I don't have a parent category page "leather Jacket" because my homepage will rank for this keyword instead. Should I do a loop among all Leather Jacket child categories and at the end link to the homepage, or this is strange ?

Thank you very much for your detailled and complete answer, I really appreciate it !

Optimizing leatherjackets.com (hompeage) and leatherjackets.com/jackets (category page) for the same keyword "leather jacket" will not create cannibalization issue ?

Even if my homepage will also include keywords related to leather apparels, because it's a homepage, it will be more powerful than a category page and I think (it's just my opinion, I'm probably wrong) that Google will rank my homepage instead of my category page, for the keyword "leather jacket".

What's your point of view about that ?

Optimizing leatherjackets.com (hompeage) and leatherjackets.com/jackets (category page) for the same keyword "leather jacket" will not create cannibalization issue ?
yeah, it can...

But I'm hoping that google's retarded algorithm is advanced enough to figure out which page is more relevant to which keyword...

Besides, that's why I recommended to optimize the homepage for stuff like "leather jackets and other apparel", or "leather jackets, hats, boots and other accessories", etc... instead of just "leather jackets". It's the best structure I could figure for your scenario...

very possible :)

o effectively silo your e-commerce website with an exact match domain (EMD) like leatherjacket.com, where you have various categories related to "https://ioniasports.com/" and other unrelated categories like leather boots and leather hats, you can create a logical site structure and internal linking strategy.

Silo structure with an EMD involves creating a structure of separate, distinct websites that are connected with each other by using a single domain. This is done to ensure that each website has a distinct purpose and is optimized for a specific keyword or topic. The silo structure also allows for better tracking, analysis, and optimization of the websites within the domain.

psss pssss,secret tip:
many people wonder they have pushed out 120 blog posts but google has indexed only 65 as an example and not knowing whey the others are not indexed in google.

here is my tip:
not use a seo plugin who has limit of 200 url's or 1000, go better with 10.000 or 50.000 url's you can set the number in the plugin configuration like RankMath.Better use only the google API with api plugin it has a limit of 1000 url's daily that's a lot !

Second most important thing with silo or not: when you blogging often, make your posts url very unique as possible, look at media news sites how they do that. Often google not index your posts because it sounds similar to other previous posts you have published.

Hope that helps and now enjoy to build your online empire!
