I have not seen any posts on this so here goes.

One of the main factors in page rank is being relevant for keywords you want to rank high.

So ofcourse you need to have relevant content as many of you already know.

But here is a trick that may help to boost your pr instantly.

First check all your websites pages and find any pages that are not relevant to the website and keywords you want to rank for.

For example terms of service pages, contact pages, login pages, even sales pages since many will bring down the pr score since they are not relevant to the website.

Then add a file if you do not already have one.

Then add the Disallow: tags to all of the pages that you have decided are not relevant on your robots.txt.

For those of you who have not made a robot.txt file before it is simple to do just look up robot.txt samples on google.

this works simply by bringing up the % of relevant content on your site by reducing irrelevant content in turn raising your page rank.

please comment on how this worked for you if it was useful hit the thanks button :)

Seriously, that won't increase your PR. It will increase the site/domain relevance factor and indirectly increase the position in SERPs, but not the PR. PR is a value calculated as the chances of a visitor reaching your site (not necessarily a value that regards links only).

So, I don't think what you say can increase the PR. It could increase the rankings in SERPs but not the PR.

well you are completely wrong PageRank is a numeric value that represents how important a page is on the web.

page rank is not calculated on how likely the chances a visitor will visit your site but if it did calculate it that way then an increase in serps would for sure raise the likely hood of more visitors in turn raising pr so what you should be saying is it would raise pr not that it would not.......

with that said obviously google ranks the web according to relevance.

BTW I did this with a domain that had a pr 0 and jumped to pr 1 within a day or so with all other factors being the same I have not worked on back links in months etc.

I see your a newbie on here maybe you are just trying to increase your post count

"PR is a value calculated as the chances of a visitor reaching your site" - that is Google's definition of PageRank. I am just pointing out that they never said it is just about links (so it could be other factors that affect PageRank).

I seriously doubt that they take their own SERPs as a variable in the ranking algorithm.

Yes, Google ranks a page/site according to relevance. I agree with that.

PR in the toolbar is not realtime. Maybe you had PR1 for a while. As a matter of fact, if the PR changed "within a day or so" it is very likely that you was already having PR1 and it was just not public in the toolbar yet. You are also not taking into consideration an EXTREMELY important factor/variable, that many disregard for some reason - TIME! Many of my sites just increase in SERPs with time, without me doing any link building. I can clearly notice that after a year, they get a slight increase for all terms. For some the PR increased. For others PR decreased. Others maintained PR but got better positions in SERPs anyway.

I am a newbie here, but I am quite experienced in SEO. I have 1st page rankings for a few tier 1 keywords (e.g. digital camera, digital camera reviews (not these, but of the same kind)). However that is my personal opinion and I might be wrong. I don't understand Google's algorithm in full, I can only make educated guesses. From my experience however, what you say is highly unlikely.

Bottom line: Toolbar PageRank is close to useless (I had a domain that never had any backlinks and was PR5 for 4 months). Relevancy is extremely important. Number of backlinks and toolbar PR are not that important. The key is not how many links you have and what PR, but what kind of links you have. My PR3 site with 550 backlinks is #1 in SERPs for my main keyword, above cnet.com and several sites with over 50,000 links.

We all know Matt Cuts well he talks about some of this here.

Matt Cutts That's right. Another good example is, maybe you have a login page, and everybody ends up linking to that login page. That provides very little content value, so you could NoIndex that page, but then the outgoing links would still have PageRank.
