I was curious what would be the "max size" for a "high-quality" article in 2023. If I had a website, how many words till it starts hurting my rankings?

I may have found a way to extend GPT-4 to create an article ~8000 words, but the number of pages may be too much.

from google's point of view there's no maximum. The more walls of text you feed the retarded googlebot the happier it will be... if bots can even be happy (and I'm afraid of finding out the answer...)

But you have to think from the perspective of the user: would someone read 8k words long walls of text? My guess is that only in certain niches like SEO probably... or programming / coding when there's a lot of code to showcase... or maybe if you want to teach someone how to macrame in one go, that might work, too. But for most niches and keywords writing 8k words articles is boring as fuck to read, even I hate reading that much content nowadays and I used to be an advocate of blogging over vlogging...

Anyway, the point is that google will not penalize you directly for writing so much content, but if your users get bored and click BACK fast, without interacting with your page in any way, google will see this and might penalize your content indirectly for having low performance / engagement. So, in the end it will still bite you in the ass....

Just write enough words to properly address the intent of the keyword you are targeting and if it turns out to be 2k words long content, be it! But most of the time you should stick to 800-1500 words long articles, I think that's the sweet spot...

currently google wants pages that answers the users query.

doesn't need 1200 words and you'll do better with a very short step by step response.

hope this helps.

Assuming your words are well chosen, and they address your topic in an original and well structured way, you want at least 500–800 words as a short post, and you want 1500 at least for a more involved article.
Although word count had some significance towards ranking, it isn't as important as the other parts of SEO. To rank your blog you will need to prove to Google that your blog and articles are relevant and provide useful information to a Google user. Google determines this by weighing your website against others with similar content.
So, don’t simply think about the number of words, but whether you are providing authentic points, being informative and helpful, stimulating discussion. This comes under the umbrella of ‘Quality’.

There isn't a specific "max size" for an article that universally determines its quality or SEO ranking. However, 1200-1500 words are ideal for an article.

8000 words is non-sense unless it is a Thesis. There is no word count for an "SEO" article. I have a few articles that hardly have 500 words but still rank in top 5.

While people always say to write longer articles, I have seen SERPs where 400 word articles without links on a mediocre domain still does extremly well. I wonder if its because Google considers those to be a better fit for search intent than a 4000 dollars article that explains in minute detail how to shave your balls

It's not in the word count, if your article is unique & informational it will get counted. Also, make sure to update the article regularly for better reception.

This made me laugh HAHA.

I can +1 this. I have tested with 400-1000 and 1200-2000 word articles and almost all of them rank in SERP features. As most people have said in here as long as the article is informative.

8000? are you ok
I think 1200 words is best for reading

All depends on the topic. There is no such thing like "max word count"

There is no upper limit, however I personally think that the post should be at least 1500 words long in order to perform good in such a competitive space
