I was wondering is it worth getting unique ai domains and holding on to them. Thinking about the .com boom days.

Yes it can be of value seeing the AI trend currently.

I had a pleasant experience with a .io domain.

Bought it for a discounted price in 2017 on namecheap.

Had great backlinks from authority sites, it used to be a job niche startup in the US previously.

After 6 months got contacted by the previous owner.

They wanted the domain back alongwith my niche blog content.

Offer was to good to decline so, I took it.

That is pretty cool.

Idea is good and worth implementing.

How many domains can you hold? .ai domains are costlier than the regular.com domains by at least 5 times.

Was this through Namecheap auctions? or did you use any services or that track/lists expired domains & find it that way?

I was thinking about getting 2 and just holding on to them for some years. I had namecheap hosting already and had looked into their domains but they are indeed high.

By discount I meant namecheap was running discount on .io registration.

No it wasn't auction domain.

I think it was from ahrefs broken links data for techcrunch or some other authority site.

It had expired recently & lot of it's pages were still indexed.

I was lucky because domains with that good a profile are difficult to catch.

But if you keep looking at these databases regularly once in a blue moon you may get lucky.

Most of the .ai name are used by startups related to ai for building web apps using the ai technology

If you are asking from investment perspective buying a domain name and holding it for reselling in future its too risky

Even without AI being hyped like it is right now, I would still bet on such domains due to the increasing laziness of the general population.

Ok. Cool.

Domain squatting is just too risky imo unless you have a big enough portfolio.

Instead of just buying and sitting on a domain name, develop it. Make some small ai micro-saas or smth. That's guaranteed to take that domain's value up.

I am still trying to figure out how that works. Do you have any insight on it? Is this it in a nutshell people are building the site and using the chatgpt in the background for pulling information? If so Isn't this expensive?

Your best option is to just have an idea of a small product and get a developer to build it for you.

Also chatGPT api isn't that expensive. OpenAI sells their GPT3.5 model for $0.002/1k tokens.

That is actually not a bad price for a small project.. I am a PHP developer.
