hey guys, i do some reddit stuff and scraping and i am tired of using shitty proxies or overpriced mobile proxies. i have a few old androids sitting around and i can get pretty cheap sims and data plan in my country. how would i convert these phones to their own proxy servers / a tiny mobile proxy farm? i am not looking to sell these etc. just for my own personal use so i know my proxies that i am using are secure and only used by me. if i can make them rotate that would be great but if not it’s not a biggie either.

all tips / recommendations are very welcome :)

haha, with all you've asked, you can just launch a mobile proxy business. Good luck though!

Problem solved then

Find a Suitable App: You'll need to download an app that turns your phone into a proxy server. There are several apps that can do this, for example, HTTP Injector, Servers Ultimate, or Proxy Server by Ice Cold Apps. These apps can vary in their ease of use and functionality, so you might want to experiment to find what suits you best.

Set Up Your Phone: Install the chosen app on your phone and follow the app's instructions to set up a proxy server. This usually involves specifying a port number and enabling the server. Make sure that the phone is connected to the internet using your SIM card data plan.

Connect to Your New Proxy Server: You can now use the IP address of your phone and the specified port number to connect to your new proxy server. In the settings of the device that you want to connect (your computer, for example), input the phone's IP address and the proxy server's port number.

Check out this guide, this is exactly what you are looking for – I hope this article will be helpful to you.

Building your own proxies from old smartphone will turn out much more cost effective as well as you have full control of your proxy to make it more stable and efficient.

There's no open source solutions for this.

Estimated cost is 2 weeks of a good android developer time = $6k.

Now count how many months of quality 4g proxies you can rent.

Friend, there are many applications where you pay a monthly fee, install their application and that's it, you have the proxy.

Obviously in addition to the payment or subscription that you must already have with the SIM card.

The most important thing here is the location, and remember this, the upload speed of your internet connection on your phone (obviously without Wi-Fi).

Open-source solutions are definitely available, but they require a bit of know-how and combining several technologies. Turelink and miasmith provided some great tips -- that's the way to go.

Also, the original poster mentioned not necessarily needing IP rotation. In that case, you could simply create a mobile hotspot. For scraping purposes, this seems like a pretty normal approach.

Even this you can manually rotate with airplane, right? Or will that only be rotating the IP of the mobile device itself and not any other devices using its hotspot.
Yep, for sure, changing the IP of your mobile phone does change the IP for all devices connected to it via hotspot.
But manually doing this every time, especially if your work requires IP rotation, can be quite a pain. That's why I said, if you don't need rotation, then the hotspot is ok.

Well u can check out proxidize, they have this companion app that lets you use your phone the same way as a usb modem, though you have to pay a subscription

Thanks, was getting mixed answers from people

Just keep in mind, though Ive never used them myself, there have been some very negative stories regarding these services on here. Ranging from services not working/not getting refunds, to devices being hacked due to security issues with these apps. End of the day you get what you pay for, I highly recommend the proxy or hotspot route. Its proven, it works, its secure.

Properly setting up your own proxies on the technical side of things should never be as simple as installing an app for 10$ a month

I have the same what i needs as you and I created my own application. You can try it. I just updated it again to enhance some features for newer android devices today.
