A long time ago I copied a picture from a website to my website. There is nothing special about the picture. It was taken by an amateur photographer. imagine you are walking down the street and you take a picture of a parked honda civic. That's how boring and stupid the picture is. Now I got a letter from a law firm with a complaint. It's not a threat to sue, I am actually getting sued. I am freaking out. How much am I looking at here? Are we talking like $1000 or like $100,000? How are damages assessed in these situations? What are the damages really? so I copied a picture. so what? How is the photographer damaged?

The fact you dont understand what you did wrong is kind of disturbing
How is the photographer damaged?
Let's say, you made a program, let's say its the next tiktok.
It didn't succeed.
Someone took your entire app, and didn't give you credits nor asked you for permission
Took the code by code and now making $$$.
How would you feel, that your work is stolen by someone else & they making $ of it.

Depends on way to many factors, your country, your website, your defense and even your lawyer.

Interesting, I think you should discuss this with a lawyer.

ironic that in your signature you have a service selling thousands of pirated themes.

You sound a little salty
Probably frustrated you got caught.
And most definitely don't understand how GPL Licensing works.
Freedom to redistribute copies, so you can help your neighbor.
Freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions, giving the community a chance to benefit from your changes.

Did you post your actual real name and address on your website? If yes, why?
It's important to remain anonymous on the internet unless you really need to reveal your information to business partners.

If you are in a 1st world country then this could be real problem. For 3rd world countries not big of a deal.

when you buy a theme or plugin from themeforest you are buying it for one and only one website. You are not free to distribute it as you please. GPL has nothing to do with themeforest.

Yes I posted my real name because I figured it's more professional. imagine people want to write me a check. I tell them to make it payable to Joe. They are going to be asking why is your name Kevin on your website? who is Joe?
To make matters worse, my domain registrar has my real name. my host has my real name. There is no denying that this website is mine.

You should reveal the website link that contains the picture so that we can make a more accurate assessment. Setting aside copyright concerns, a picture can have significant implications depending on the context in which it is used.

I won't reveal the website but it's as simple as this: imagine a website about honda civics mpg, and I post a picture someone took of a honda civic on the street.

That’s what you think. We are not getting the full “picture” here
