I see a lot of websites posting song lyrics from bands and artist's. Since as there are a ton of this exact content already existing online, is there any potential Google penalty for creating your own lyric posts from the same songs? And is there any chance in ranking against sites like Genius?

Many queries like this seem to have an exception.

Content is 90% the same, only thing different is formatting and design.

I think you are safe to create your own dup.

But make sure the formatting is unique, add a voice over, image or little info about band, song etc.
