I have just started a newish channel and what I started doing was taking 45-60 second clips from YouTube, stripping their audio, applying my own audio, and meshing the clips together to make a new video montage. I started uploading a video today and I instantly got hit with 9 emails warning of copyright issues and I can't monetize the video. How do I avoid this?

Simple answer even if you might not like it - don't steal content and create your own.
I'm not really stealing though. This video I reference was a "Kobe Bryant Buzzer Beaters" video, so I got clips of all the buzzer-beaters he hit in his career, put them together, added my own audio, and used transitions between clips. Would using less than 30 second clips eliminate the issue?

You just said what you did which is 100% stealing. It's not your content that you're using. Especially with sports it's almost impossible to get away with it, since there are large corporations monitoring YouTube 24/7.

You should use original content to be safe. It will take some time to learn all this.

How come it be considered as stealing ?
Editing, adding on to an audio, making certain transition, is itself a new content kno. Taking help of certain pictures and video would lead to stealing!!!
Also youtube has large corporation monitoring, then there are many such videos which are not complete new content, they are still surviving and doing great.

Even if you edit it thousand times, change it's audio, clip it at multiple places but the footage remains other people's intellectual property. Just because you have edited and added your 'value' doesn't make it yours. You still do not hold the legal rights to use those few seconds video clips from others videos.
If you keep doing the same you will keep getting strikes.

As @sageshark said it is simply not your own content. Here's an analogy:
Trying to claim someone else's YouTube video as your own is like putting a different hat on someone else's parrot and insisting that it's now your talking bird. No matter how fancy the hat or how well you train it to say new phrases, at the end of the day, it's still someone else's parrot.
Absolutely correct! Masking online is difficult.
I remember, two decades ago, printers changed cover page, intro, foreword, chapter titles and a few sentences/words per page and sold in open market. Before the actual publisher got a hint and brought stay order, millions were minted.

I guess you didn't do a proper transformation to the clip. The best is to get the concept from others content and fabricate your own idea from that instead of using another person's clip.

I have seen many movie clips being used for Parody You Tube channels. The creator edits the original audio and adds his own voiceover and it is fine.
This fits within the fair use policy of You Tube for the reasons only they know.
But any content that already exists on other channels on You Tube will give you copyright claim if you use their content.

If you take any video or audio clips from YouTube, you are going to be punished with copyright. focusing on producing comparable stuff.
