Reddit communities go dark for 48 hours

Huffman himself told The New York Times in April he found it unacceptable that AI companies such as OpenAI have been scraping huge amounts of Reddit data to train their systems – for free.

I think I know what reddits trying to do, they want to lock everyone out and then use AI to machine learn all the data and then before that profit of it.

Open AI really screwed them over scraping Reddit, GitHub, Facebook, everything.

There's no ramifications because it was not sold the data only trained on.

They want to monetize people who ban any kind of promotional content and hate ads. They brought this upon themselves. They created a system where any kind of promotion (even ones random content posts) are hated on.
Redditors are the higgest weirdos i have ever seen in my life (Not all of them but in general)... I use it still to advertise my service but i need to do it nicely to avoid all those IQ 80 wanna be smart people attention..

Sounds like way more people on the side of the Reddit CEO on this.

Reddit is planning on having an IPO later this year so they are getting greedy to line their pockets and willing to stomp all over reddit users and volunteers to get it. No surprise for companies but I for one find it hilarious that they got too greedy and are taking a big hit for it. Trying to squeeze and bully volunteers never has worked and never will. What it will do is push those online communities to relocate.

What is going to happen is the CEO is going to resign and they are going to reverse their decision and beg everyone to come back. They will claim it was for the benefit of the volunteers or some bs except I'm pretty sure it's already too late with this latest maneuver they took.

Funny enough I went to look up the origins of the "beatings will continue until morale improves" except the answer was on a reddit page that has gone private
I agree with you. Sometimes pressure on volunteers and community members can lead to severe consequences. If things continue like this, there is a possibility that the CEO will step down and that will cause significant problems for Reddit. I don't think they entirely understand the implications of that decision at this point.

The CEO will just laugh and shit on the mods faces. They are already setting ultimatums that you either open the subs or you are removed as a mod.
The mods have jack shit power and this blackout just showed how much "power" they actually have.

Reddit is not as was before few Years.
Yes, I completely agree with you. Reddit used to have a certain atmosphere that a lot of people loved. You could really learn a lot there for free. Now it's all about something new, which isn't always a good idea.

The funny thing is that reddit could have simply lowered the pricetag. It was free before so any price tag wouldve been an improvement. Instead the chose one that noone could afford and doubled down when questioned. Then they got caught in lies, mocking the community and forcefully opening the subreddits. Honestly im suprised anyone supports them

Good luck replacing 3k mods that do the work for free, and that is with third party apps to make life easier.

r/videos is going dark permanently until it is resolved
Well, seems r/videos is back.
It can, but that would go against their "freedom of speech"
Freedom of speech? How? This is tantamount to YouTube removing your video or banning your channel; at the end of the day, these moderators built ON REDDIT and Reddit's content.

I agree with the person who said Reddit brought this on themselves by promoting a platform that frowned at every form of adverts.

Those protesting this are somewhat similar to those who use ad blockers, and I don't really like people like that; these platforms, you all enjoy being able to sustain themselves with these ads, its a trade if you don't want them using your data then don't use their services.
