wordpress comment spam - does it really have any advantages today?

I see lots of senseless comments on WP posts wondering if these are worth anything? What is your opinion?

A question, though, do spam comments hurt the sites where they are posted to? I block all comments, just in case

All's good if you mark it as user-generated content and it isn't illegal or objectionable (copyrighted content, links to porn/gambling/drugs shit)
