Introduction
As a kid growing up becoming a 3D animator and getting into the film industry was always a big dream of mine. So much so after graduating high school in 2011 I continued my education and went to college where I earned my bachelor’s degree in computer science for animation. After graduating in 2013 from a 2 year accelerated program I quickly realized how competitive the Industry was, submitting over 60 resumes through out New York City with only one response stating “We can tell you just came out of college and your a noob. Good luck.” That one email crushed me.

Other students I graduated with moved to Cali with not much luck either. Some people were working 2-3 jobs just so they could volunteer at a studio for free in hopes they would later get a job offer.

Fast forward to 2023, with no luck breaking into the animation, I now work in a totally different industry with a great career. Great salary, pension, benefits, retirement, take home car. However that passion for the 3D industry never left me. I still do 3D modeling simply as a hobby, it’s just something I will always have a passion for and love to do.

The Journey
For this journey money isn’t really my focus. Of course it would be nice to eventually earn an income but thats not really the goal for me. In fact there will be no monetary goal for this journey.

Knowing that there are people out there that rely on competitive industries such as, product design, animation, game design, architecture visualization and so on as a source of income. I truly would like to create a library of 3D models that could help them make their jobs easier or even help land their first job.

With that being said I will be making a website where people can download commercial free 3D models based on real world products from sites such as Wayfair, Amazon, Bestbuy, furniture stores etc.. that they could use on their projects. All the models will have real world proportions so people can easily add them to whatever project they may be working on.

The only goal I will have is the total number of 3D models that are uploaded into the library.
Eventually I hope to have thousands.

(Not sure if this part is allowed)
knowing there’s many freelancers on black hat world I will be sharing the links to all my models here as I create them. As I said before I will not be selling anything and all models will be free to be commercially used.

What I Have So Far

I have a domain which I won’t be sharing until I have an initial group of models ready to post. Somewhere around 50 I would say.

If there is anything that people are specifically looking for to be modeled feel free to post it here or DM reference images and I’ll set up a wish list.

Any questions please feel free to ask!

Sound's interesting, sure like to follow this journey.

But what's your end goal? Achievement to know you've completed the journey?

would be good if you could develp this for contractors to show customers. upload a picture of the room and then to be able to change it around with different styles they can choose from

Please do follow!

It’s a good question that i currently don’t have the answer to. Which in a way is good, personally if I have a goal and I don’t see results fast I get discouraged and lose interest. This is something that I just genuinely love doing and if I see people using the assets that I make I’ll be happy. Before deciding on making this type of site, I thought about creating a service and doing product renders and architecture renders but with my job I just don’t have the time. Like this I can make individual models which are relatively fast to do compared to large scenes and upload them right to the site. I would like to have a forum section on the site where people can share their work, ask questions hire or land jobs but that’s all in the future.

That’s a pretty good idea! One of my networking strategies is going to be to reach out to interior design companies, architects etc.. once I have a large enough library. I think companies will appreciate models that are based on real world items that can actually be purchased. A lot of these current sites have tons of models but I never see an extensive library where you can pick an item from a store and place it in your scene to show to customers.

UPDATE

Tonight I prepared 6 models for upload, I should have another dozen or so prepared tomorrow. like I said above I think 50+ models would be a good starting point for the website launch and then continue to add daily. Very much looking forward to share what I have with you guys and hopefully I could be of help to someone. Thanks for any encouraging words.

SMALL UPDATE

Just wanted to share a small update. I purchased my WordPress theme and I'm currently working on setting up the site lay out, functions and all that. I prepped several more existing files and added 2 more models to the library which you can see below. These are 2 examples of the quality that you can expect to see from the site. I try to make my models as accurate to the real world product as possible.

I don't plan on texturing the models as it is very time consuming(for me at least). Maybe in the future ill add textured versions to the site as a premium version but that wont be anytime soon. What I will add in the download file is the reference images that I used to model the object so the end user can use that as a reference to texture the model.

As always thank you for checking out the thread, any questions about the site or just 3d modeling in general feel free to ask!

@Connect6 Few of my observations -

1) A journey without a definite goal and time frame is not a journey. It is just a random venture done as a hobby or pastime.

2) You are planning to build a site with thousands of 3D models which you will be offering to the community for free. You cant make those many all by yourself. You need to invite free submissions from the people from 3D community.

3) You seem to be offering all this for free. But I can guarantee you that once you have a good repository and good traffic on your site you will find agencies approaching you for paid work / buying models and so on. You will have to implement the commercial structure in your website like a marketplace. You have expressed this wish in one of your messages -
I think companies will appreciate models that are based on real world items that can actually be purchased.

So this project of yours will no longer be free for community.

4) This is a journey thread, so you can not offer anything for free in this section. If you want to offer freebies and giveaways then we have a separate section for that - https://www.blackhatworld.com/forums/freebies-giveaways.174/

5) You can not sell anything in this section. I know you don't want to, I am just making it clear. It will be against the terms of the forum. I have just deleted one post from a user asking paid service in this thread.

Good luck for your journey.
