What does backlinks mean in an ahref?

"ahref" may not be the be-all and end-all of SEO, but I'm wondering what the number of backlinks shown by the "ahref" backlink checker means?

A.site.com
Backlinks: 300 (100% ********)

B.site.com
Backlinks: 2.9K (10% ********)

In this case, does B.site.com have a ******** figure of 290?

In the above case, should A.site.com rank higher than B.site.com?

Some sites have less than 100 backlinks from "ahref".

Yet they are ranked in the top 1-3 positions.

They're ranking 1-3 for difficult keywords.

I'm confused.

Number of backlinks do not matter, diversity is what you aim for in link building.

They can have 2.9k backlinks but they may have only few referring domains or links are just no follow and automated

But someone with only 100 backlinks could have 50-75 different diversified authority domain backlinks, relevant to niche only.

Also some people with pbn’s hide links from ahrefs, can’t see them all.
