While most of the time upvotes will register, there are certain factors that can affect that.

Most important being the trust score of the account and IP used to upvote.

You can also get downvoted.
And then reddit will also strip upvotes if it feels its botted.

It's 1:1 up until a certain number, but then you get less and less the higher it goes. I once had a post get 80k upvotes but gained only 6k karma.

The point is, it's better to have 10 x 10k karma posts rather than 1 x 100k karma post, hope it helps!

But yeah, 1 upvote != 1 karma. Reddit also takes into consideration the number of votes, the IP and accounts that voted (votes from reputed members count more).
