Use strategic placement of these external links.. It all depends on how you and why you are doing it. Most of the time its helped my clients.

If they are your direct competitors, I wouldn't. You're trying to out rank them, giving a boost only aims to make your job harder.

Outgoing links never hurt, just not to your competitors obviously.

An email, their contact form on their website, maybe get their contact info from Whois.

I linked to someone in my niche from a relatively new blog, and I even misspelt their name! lol However they linked back, and their domain has 30k referring domains and is a tight site. Quite happy with that. Just annoyed at myself that I haven't used this tactic to its full potential yet.

You should not link to every 'authority' site in your niche and if they are a competitor then you should never link to them. But you should link to trusted sources like Wikipedia, Wiki How, .gov sites (and other similar sites).

If you mention the source of information in the footer by linking to the reputed sites then it will build a trust among the people who read your articles. They will feel that your article is well researched and well referenced.

Sure, you could be doing this without issues. Don't do it too exaggeratedly, just in a fair measure.

To avoid "losing" visitors, force the open on a new tab, so when they close it, they go back to your article.:

YES! if that content is authentic and the user or website is well-known. You can use a no-follow link for other people's content. Using authentic websites increasing the authenticity of your content

Never Do this. If you Wanna help your Competitor for the Specific Keyword Out Rank You Than Please Go ahead. If you Wanna Rank Better than Your Competitor Never Give a Backlink To a Relevant Site who Is Also targeting to rank For the same Keyword which You Wan to rank For.
