BEWARE Ahrefs Enterprise & API

So I wanted to sign up to ahrefs enterprise so I could export keyword data for various ranking pages..

Spoke to support and was told it would be around 50 credits per site to get the keywords, so I went ahead and got in touch with the enterprise team to get signed up.

Paid my $1000 then ran my first test.

Turns out, 50 credits gets you 1 keyword for 1 page. To get say, 1500 keywords for 1 page would be about 70k credits.

Nice.. So it's $1000 for 2 million credits.

I can get keywords for about 25 pages for $1000. Fantastic. Works out at around $40 per page.

You can buy another 1 million credits for $50, but that's still about $3.5 per page. So if I want 10,000 pages, that's going to cost me $35,000.

https://dataforseo.com/ charge you $0.07 to get EVERY keyword for a page. So, 10,000 pages would be $700.

Contacted them on the day I signed up and asked if they could refund me, minus the credits used.

They declined and told me that instead, they will *allow* me to cancel my subscription at the end of the month, and if I want more data..

Wait for it..

I can EXPORT IT MANUALLY.

So I will pay $1000 for an enterprise API account so I can manually export keywords.

And bare in mind, I've been a customer with these guys for 10 years.

Disgusting. Absolutely disgusting. $1000 is worth more to them than a long term customer relationship.

I can't imagine a client of mine signing up, then a day later saying "Tom, I'm sorry buddy I made a mistake signing up and I've changed my mind. Can you refund me minus your expenses so far". Heck, I just refund them the full amount. A relationship is worth more than 1 sale.

You'd think such a large company would act better than this.

So if anyone is thinking of using ahrefs for their API.. Avoid them. Go for https://dataforseo.com/ instead.

How many support agents have you spoken with? The result probably won’t change but I have found small success in cycling through agents until one gives me the desired outcome.

That’s an absurd pricing scheme for that though.

I emailed the enterprise sales guy who sold me the package. He ignored me, so I contacted support. They said they'd contact the enterprise team. The next day he responded to me and said he'd "ask his supervisors". A few days later emailed back saying it's a no.

They’re a $100M+ profit per year company.
For them to be greedy towards a day 1 customer is just typical of larger companies nowadays.

Also, being stingy with data really irks me.

It's not even about the money. I don't mind losing the money on a gamble.. It's the cost of doing business, but it's the fact that I thought of all places my money would be safe somewhere like ahrefs. I'd expect this more from a money grabbing new startup.

I already told them I was going to leave them negative reviews and utilize my reputation in the SEO community to spread the word. I'd rather show them that hey, there's consequences to treating customers like shit.

Even their new actual usage prices are unreal..

For your $1k/mo enterprise they give you 500 credits per month.

1 credit = 1 search on ahrefs for a domain or page.

So if you search 30 pages on 1 site, that's 30 of your 500 credits for the month.

If you want more, you have to pay I think it's another $50 per 500 credits or something. It's insane. They used to give you unlimited manual searches.

You are absolutely right and I had the exact same experience with them. Paid hundreds of $ just to keep paying more and more for credits. Wtf is this? It's such a poor thing to do. Charging for every click. Who had this damn idea?

Also funny how these guys from Ahrefs tried to label themselves as the good guys when they donated all the money to the Ukraine government and gave out free subscriptions. Didn't work out so well financially huh? Now they have to scam the paying users I guess.

I have also heard about this service, but I just knew about it recently. Can you guys share the service you are using? It would be really helpful for me.

I remember earlier in the year Ahrefs made some questionable changes that lead to a decline in their popularity. Upsetting but provides a good opportunity for competitors

You should use this. They also limit the usage time and occasionally slow connection.

@splishsplash thats a horrible experience and I’m not surprised it’s Ahrefs their pricing structure and all made me stay away from them. With your reputation they’re bound to lose customers and hopefully they issue you a apology and make good to you

They have been going down for a while. They are very lucky they have the best crawlers on the market and still the most reliable "power metric", but man.

Half the time there's something not working and I use maybe 5 of their functionalities altogether.

They have always been very limiting, for example the number of domains you can run through batch analysis (200, for comparison, Majestic can do 100K), but this shit with API is a cherry on top, especially the behavior of the support.

That’s disgusting customer support. We live in a granular world where usage can be sectioned into credits, why can’t they refund what you clearly haven’t used?

I hope you can follow @PHPInjected advice and try again contacting support, or writing in with your thoughts on their customer service- even if you have written off that cost, it’s just worth making the point to them that’s it’s not a good practice.

It's been going in this direction for a while.

New Base plans also have this attitude.

For example, no matter the level of plan, you still have to pay extra seat if you want to invite team member.
