If you go to the gym, do you go there because you are disciplined or because you want to have 6 pack abs (this is motivation).Motivation is bad to do something, and it does not matter what it is. What you need is discipline.
What if you have a bad day because you don't feel good? Do you go back to your bed? Do you watch Netflix or do other things that don't matter? Most likely.
And the very old famous saying is quite currently outdated.
If you have a GF, and you want to make her a surprise to take her on a holiday, this reason will be enough to push you to work harder (or extra hours) to obtain the money for the holiday. This is called motivation not discipline.
-------
If you do not feel good, maybe is a physical problem that is beyond your control, it has nothing to do with discipline. If a football player has a muscle stretch, he will stop playing but not because he is not disciplined, it is something beyond of his control. Watching netfilx is nothing bad because you are human and you need relaxation, it is impossible to work always. Moderation is the key and the Chinese knew this over 1000 years ago with their concept of Yin and Yang.

The man who invent the saying was smarter than me or you and so far the old saying is still valid - with a Google search you will find thousands of examples.

It is good to have a different opinion but it is better if the ideas are sustainable with strong examples, in this way, I can see if I'm wrong or not.
