Zero Spend KDP Journey using AI with a twist

Background

So my quiz sites are doing well (not lockdown well but we’ll enough) so I have decided to set myself a challenge and thought I would share the journey here. I have done KDP stuff before in a different niche so this will be starting from scratch. No list no brand name nothing. Otjer

The Challenge

Make $1000 a month on KDP using AI and all without spending any money.

Making The Book

Unlike a lot of people at the moment I am going to go away from the low to no content books and produce something that will have around 100,000 words.

So am I going to get AI to write an entire book?

Well yes and no. So here’s the twist in the tale. There are books which are year on year best sellers but which were originally authored centuries ago. The content of these books are timeless and wonderful but the archaic language provides a barrier to entry.

My theory is by using AI to update the books for a modern reader we can lower this barrier.

Now because these books are already best sellers they will have a ready made audience that may be interested in this updated version.

With press releases and a littler searching on social media I think I should be able to attract an audience to this project.

Method

This is simply copy and paste. I am going to head over to project Gutenberg pick a book and then copy and paste the book into Chatgpt. I will need to do this a fair few times to get the book fully modernised.

Once done I will read and format the book.

Usong a text to image generator I will get some art together and create a book cover in Canva.

Upload the book to Amazon and let’s see what happens.

I will be marketing but through social media, forums and by targeting specific newspaper, magazines and blogs with a press release. Just won’t be spending money on this book.

I did something like this 10+ years ago, only without ai or rewriting them and was making $5,000+ per month. So, am sure it will work. The key is picking the public domain books lots of people want and then ranking them.

same there’s nothing particularly new her just speeding the process up with AI. I have a book in mind which is about 300 years old and never been out of print and from looking at Amazon is selling about 30 copies a day.

I will be updating the language used. The English language from two and three hundred years ago is quite different to modern day English. So it’s a bit like translating it for a modern audience but from old English to contemporary modern English.

Essentially the actual prompt I use is:

All manually just keep copy and pasting the next section. Bloody boring as hell but I am half way through.

So after quite a boring day the AI bit is done. I am going to give the book a read over tomorrow and format it ready for loading up to KDP.

I have also used a text to image AI website to create a cover for the book and used Canva to make it into a book cover.

How does Amazon treat rewritten/updated PD works? Do they allow you to claim copyright and select the 70% royalty? Do they accept even if the manuscript is not differentiated (translated/annotated/illustrated)?

Book is on presale at the moment.

Had to play around with wording to get the book accepted by kindle but I am on the 70% royalty due to it being complete rewritten and modernised.

I haven’t really thought about it. I have a collection of a lot 7000 books that are in the PD but not your obvious PD books. I could work through these but I don’t know.
