Yup, either gaining more or gaining better quality backlinks from more relevant sites. If the anchor text of those backlinks contains some or all of the words of your keyword, it will help even more, especially if the anchor text of the link is surrounded by relevant content on the site it is posted. Also, adding more content to your site that focuses on the keywords you're trying to maintain positions for can really help.

Also, updated content once in a while, this will at least get the Googlebot to your site more. Update the content with more relevant keywords.

Backlinks are the key I think. I was climbing really good for my specific keyword and I stopped backlink building for a week and it all came to a hault. I dont know if this is the exact reason I stopped climbing. I now constantly try to build at least a few backlinks every day.

Links, my friend. Links, and more links. Higher PR the better, but at the beginning take everything. Consider joining one of the 3 way link networks. They have worked well for me.
