can someone tell me if its best to keep the www on a site or take it off..and how do you go about taking it off..i have heard that both sites will be indexed and you need to make a choice. So basically im asking which is the best choice, and how do i make the choice?

You mean which way is better for linking?

The server should definitely handle both types of requests.

I am not able to give the excat link as Webmasterworld has become paid now.

Bud put the same query string like >> www and no www site:webmasterworld.com and you'd get the thread I am talking about.

yes - there is where we have the cannonical url now taking over.

Most most servers nowadays have inbuilt redirect wherein domain.cXm is directed to wwww.domain.cXm

It doesn't matter which version you use, so long as you're consistent in i.e. when backlinking, always use the same version.

i don't use the www and found out later that all your backlinks should be the same as how you have it.

so will http://domain.com and http://www.domain.com will be considered duplicate info, do i have to do a 301 redirect?

Yes, you do need to pick one, and then re-direct the other version to your chosen version. Most of this is done automatically nowadays with things like WP, etc.

But if you have sites that aren't setup to do this, you should go in and change it since Google will see them as duplicate content.

use htaccess 302/1 to the non www. The non www is better because more likely links will forget to include that.

thanks everyone for the replies really cleared up somethings for me.
