Intresting stuff...I build a email server , at home using one of my laptop , i was able to send about 100k emails , with 80%inbox rate...Didnt know what to do at that time, Something like this could work wonders if you are in US , UK if you have emails which are opt in and will not raise complaints from users...(But no spamming as ip addresss will be in your name moreover laws in these countries are pretty sctrict , and if they find you spamming leagl action might be taken.)
If you build it from scratch , cost would be just like using a computer at home , Definitely much more powerful than you would get after renting a server , A copy of Centos and a whitelisted Ip address.
Total cost should not exceed more than $100 for setup and everything..and is almost no cost in the coming months...If your ip doesnt get blacklisted by mail networks...ie yahoo gmail etc...Then you are on Roll...services like aweber work on something similar to this...
How did you build a mailing server? You hosted a domain on your laptop?
