Do You Use a Laptop or a Desktop for Work?

In the office I use a desktop - reason being is that I have more processing power, more RAM and more drive space at an affordable cost and also that I can connect to 3 monitors from the desktop.
When I am working away from the office I use a laptop - reason being is that its easier to transport than a desktop

If I were trying to answer the question for you, as to whether you should buy a desktop or a laptop I would make the decision based on whether you work from one location (home/office) more than you work from different locations (away from office/travelling) and that would dictate which is better (desktop or laptop).

That's what I have now....an MSI gaming laptop.

It's been a good laptop (for power) but had nothing but trouble with the screen and hinges.

Most days the screen doesnt come on.

I have to keep powering off the laptop and turning it back on until the screen decides it wants to come on.

I would never buy another MSI laptop.

Could I ask you what your desktop specs are? I guess your laptop could be as powerful as your desktop anyway. But I am not sure how powerful is powerful for you (atleast it is for me. My current laptop is the most powerful machine I have ever had. Desktop or otherwise).

Both, Work provided me a work laptop.
But most days I do prefer to use my own desktop as I enjoy working with 2 decently sized screens of the same size. & only use the laptop when I need to run stuff thru the work vpn.
Since the laptop only has 1 port so a 22inch paired with a 15inch really sucks and annoys me.

I see it as different needs calls for differnet situations.
Are you always in the same spot? If so, then desktop would probably work out cheaper and better in the long term.
If you are constantly on the move, then laptop may be a better option.
Spec wise, desktop is usually always superior in all cases for a cheaper price. That includes upgrades.

Well me i use a laptop because i like to moving
For example some days i like to go to cofee shops like starbucks and i take my laptop with me
Or when its very nice outside i take my laptop outside and work in my yard and i am also grateful for the amazing things life give us : nature ,sky etc

I do like having those options.....but I've never understood how people can concentrate in a coffee shop?

Yeah the battery's aren't the best....

I was using a laptop for some good years.

What happened is they get obsolete and upgrading to a new laptop is more costly than throwing a new MB + powerful CPU in a desktop.

I7 11th gen (11700k), 16gb ram, RX 6700 XT. 1 tb NVME.
I guess it’s not so much the power, but the cost associated with it: you can get more for your money with a desktop as you are not paying the premium for portability and compactness.
My laptop is similar spec, minus the gpu, but cost a lot more than the pc.

I’d suggest a desktop then. More power for the money, easier to upgrade, easier to connect more monitors if needed.

hmmmm so I guess a macbook pro could solve your problems hehe (isn’t it cheaper than premium hardware?) .

Mine has 32gbs of ram and apple silicon (m1 max) which is freaking fast. But then, OS matters too. If you are comfortable with windows, mac would not be more productive afterall.

I think a MacBook Pro cost more than my computer, which was around £1400 before adding monitors. The processors are comparable but the i7 is a little higher rated than the chip you mentioned. Also, whilst I don’t mind AppleOS, I am really a windows person at heart.

which one do you use the most?

My main PC, though I have laptops running 24/7 that I monitor on other monitors.
The one good thing about working in IT for yourself is that you can justify some monster equipment.
Dont get laptops unless you work in a different office everyday - pointless your just paying for the expensive mobile hardware.

If you dont need to be mobile then there is really no need for a laptop.
Could invest the extra $ you would have spent on a laptop in a better screen, station/chair setup for more productive hours.
