Using indexing services or indexing links yourself?

Bear with me as I'm quite new to seo, both black and white. As I have understood, if you want your pages to appear on google you need them to be indexed and if you make any changes you need to make a crawl request to google after the changes, but there are many great guides out there such as http://ahrefs.com/blog/google-index/#build-links and a ton of other super useful articles. Are these services here just to make your life easier or is there any genuine benefit to using an indexing service comared to just doing it yourself?

indexing services are useful when / if google refuses to index links naturally... or sometimes to just speed up the indexing process. If you're not in a hurry and can wait months (it used to be days, but now it takes longer) for your links to be indexed you don't need to do anything and google will reach you eventually.

Of course, there is also the possibility of your backlinks / pages not being indexed at all... or getting indexed and then, few days later getting de-indexed. This is happening a lot recently, and it could be due to many reasons, not excluding glitches in google itself

Signals such as content growth and backlink accumulation should give Google's crawler load algorithms enough data to know it should be crawling your site at regular intervals. You can include information such as 'priority' and 'changefreq' to your sitemaps but this is pretty much ignored.

I didnt know it took months. I was under the asumption that if you did your setup correctly it would take a week at most, but months just sounds unreasonable. Is there any reason for this change? like an update to google recently?

Interesting. Didnt know that google regularly crawl you website if you add value. Would this also increase you rank?
If the 'priority' and 'changefreq' is mostly ignored, could it do more harm as in google acknowledging what you're doing and deindexing or something negative? I genuinely wonder how digital marketing companies manage to keep up with all the changes that are constantly happening. It must be almost impossible to keep up with it all.

Digital marketing companies are facing more and more challenges in recent days. It is really tough then compare with the past.
But as in all other industries experts are finding a solution to handle all the google updates as they come into the game.The Big 'G' Google make the game more tough day by day.

some links do take months to get indexed (low quality ones usually). You can set up things correctly and google can still ignore them

I think there are people who understand it pretty well, but I'm not one of them

But I also think google has problems. Their algo is so complex that any change you make to a part of it can easily mess up another part. I've heard someone say that the google algo has billions of lines of code and if that's true... well, you can figure

Website size and freshness definitely seems to be a factor at the moment if you look at the SERPs.

Nah, Google has mainly stopped being 'vindictive' about stuff like that, it's just ignored.

You can wait for some time for natural indexing, if it's not indexing you can use services to get it done. Nowadays indexing takes more days than usual.
