Is it even worth doing this or is it better not to waste your time and resources?

It really depends on your site.
To get quality links you need to have a quality website... my $0.02.

If you are going to rely on BHW/Third party sellers then you'll get placements on sites that are slutted out to no end. Link farms, and sites that have Casino posts, this is what I see 90% of the time when a seller sends me samples. However, if you are willing to take the time and educate yourself on what classifies as a good link, then they are totally worth it. You don't want streetwalkers, you want high end escorts that won't put out to just anyone and infect you with their STDs.

It's the most efficient link but you must pick the site carefully. Yes it worth it.
Many sellers propose cheap guest posts... Most are PBN (Public Blog Networks); those will not work.

Do not start you outreach from a list.

Simply search the site yourself:

  • “Write for us” + your keyword
  • “ Guest Post” + your keyword
  • “ Guest post offers” + your keyword
  • “ Guest writer” + your keyword
  • “Guest writer needed” + your keyword
  • “Suggest an idea” + your keyword
  • “Suggest a blog post” + your keyword
  • “Written by” + your keyword
  • “Guest post was written by” + your keyword
Expect at least $80-100 as publication fee for a medium guest post x3-4 for a really powerfull one.

You can land on some gem links if you're outreaching within your niche.
So yes, it is totally worth it, although most of the time webmasters want to be paid.

Guest posting has always worked for me. It's time consuming but definitely boosts SEO in an authentic way. Choose sites that exceed your own DA and you should be good.

Guest Post is still Worth it
100% the challenge is finding good blogs related to your niche that are non-spam and will to accept your work without a fee. I blog in the crypto space and it's very difficult to find good opportunities. Therefore the larger players with big budgets remain dominant.

Thank you for your answers. In any case, more research needs to be done on what competitors are doing.
