Internal Search Page Indexing?

I see that a competitor in my niche has TONS of internal search pages indexed and most of them are even ranking #1 for very high volume keywords (#1 for more than 4k keywords attached to search page). They even have a system for adding these search pages into a VERY large xml sitemap. These search pages bring you to a page where "term +for sale" is the H1 and it just overall seems to be working very well for them and bringing in traffic.

Currently, the site I work on has search pages blocked from from being crawled or indexed. I am now opening to the idea of this search pages indexing, but can't seem to find much information on it. I am wondering how you would handle canonicals or preventing duplicate content. I just also want to hear what you guys here have to say about it as it is new territory for me.

Any direction on whether this is a good idea and how to properly implement or things to consider are greatly appreciated.

Internal search page indexing refers to the process of indexing the pages of a website that are generated as a result of user searches within the website. This is different from indexing the static pages of a website that can be accessed via navigation menus or links.

That is what I see them doing. Their search returns a URL with search parameters in it but also converts your search into an H1 title. Like if you search "balloons" it turns the H1 into "balloons for sale". I guess the pages that are searched the most are indexed in their site map and they do quite well for a ton of the "for sale" keywords. I don't know that this is the route I will end up taking.

Hey @ErrlyBird, the pages you're referring to are the parametric pages the internal search engine spits out? Or are them pages that resemble in all the layout of a SERP page, but have static URLs?
Can you eventually post or DM the link of the competitor website? I'm pretty curious.

P.S. I'm assuming I'm not the competitor.

It could be a viable strategy to gain long tail kw’s. I woudn’t recommend it so much for fathead/ chunky middle kws. Do you mind sharing the competitors URL? i’m quite interested to see their setup

Quite some pages have SEO content written, i woudn't really call it a bloat apart from the crappy URL structure.

@ErrlyBird they could be doing two things with their content:

1. Ripped it off public sources like wikipedia & rewrote it with a bot
2. Actually created it themselves lol

Yeah I just thought it was a good tactic and wanted to look into what was happening there. It works well for them, but I don't think it lines up with what we trying to do.
