Reddit officially removed free awards

It's official! Just wanted to confirm that free awards on Reddit have been officially removed as a feature.

A bad decision in my opinion.

They were very popular. Little things like Reddit Silver, or the Wholesome award or Helpful award. They didn't do anything, but were just a free way to show a little extra appreciation for comments or posts that people especially liked. It was nice while it lasted.

Well Reddit's main base is US and for that user base, paying as little as $5 is nothing. So that can be the reason.

They were used as signals to their algorithm, helping them choose which post to promote. They probably found a way to make these decisions without these signals.
This will probably give a lot of weight to the remaining awards.

It was used for reddit to build stitics before getting rid of it very clever.

Correct. Most users on Reddit are from the US, followed by Tier 1 countries. Reddit assumes that they will buy the monthly premium subscription now.

Yes, but many users on Reddit are pissed now because this free "feature" that always existed disappeared without a notification.
