Will this affect my website ranking?

Hey BHW,

I bought domain, but don't have time to work on my website now so I didn't buy hosting yet.

My question is if I posted link to the website on forums etc. Will I get some kind of backlink boost when I get the website properly running or should I just get hosting and start link building then?

I guess opinions differ. But think about it logically.

If google follows a link and finds a website-placeholder, it must assume that the original site was shut down. So I'd assume the link might lose value and it's better to wait.

No, it won't.

You're going to go to a placeholder.

Google has always had an issue with "incomplete sites."

It would be a total waste of time for people searching for specific keywords to end up on your placeholder page.

If anything, you are just simply shooting yourself in the foot.

By sticking to what you're doing, you probably will make things all that much harder when it comes time for you to launch an actual website.

I would suggest that you don't build links right now, and only do that when you already have a complete site up and running.

With that said, building backlinks is not a long-term solution.

I know this goes against the grain here.

But the truth is, you have to attract links through the quality and engagement of your site's content.

It's too easy to get on Google's bad side when you actively build links.

A lot of it is unavoidable to be sure.

But if you can help it, focus on quality content.

Let the quality of your work speak for itself and build an organic community around it.

This is the better long-term plan.
